“For staying is nowhere.”

Winter Solstice     21st December 2016     10:45

Is it not time, that in loving,

we freed ourselves from the loved one, and, quivering, endured:

as the arrow endures the string, to become, in the gathering outleap

something more than itself?  For staying is nowhere.

Rilke, First Duino Elegy

The Winter Solstice is defined by the Sun’s entry into Saturn-ruled Capricorn.  Saturn is the signifier of the descent into the darkest time, when energies are most contracted.  Leaves have dried and fallen as earth energies have been withdrawing; slowly the colours of growth and freshness have faded and we are now seeing the beautiful, subtle hues of the mute midwinter palette.  This is an apparent point of stasis.  And yet there is activity – amongst the roots and around the seeds: the new cycle of growth that will burgeon into being in spring is now being cultivated in chill and darkness.  This is the time of clarifying intention and conditioning  the many aspects of the new cycle of becoming that lies ahead. The Way Between Extremes

Autumn Equinox, 22nd September 2016, 14:22 GMT

2016-04-autumn equinox

The Autumn Equinox is defined by the Sun’s entry into the first degree of the sign of  Libra, whose symbol is the scales: the balance.  At this time the Sun’s path intersects with the celestial equator (Earth’s equator projected out into space) and the whole globe shares the experience of day and night being of equal length.  A beautiful moment of balance arises before the scales tilt towards winter and the closing in of darkness in the northern hemisphere. The Calyx

Summer Solstice

A magical thing, the calyx: if you open it up intrusively, before the flower is formed, it seems to be an empty green space. Given a bit more time you may see an embryonic green flower. Give it its own time and the calyx opens of itself to reveal a beautiful, colourful blossom. It’s nothing short of miraculous. The calyx is the tangible space of creation or manifestation. The word ‘calyx’ shares its root with ‘chalice’, the sacred cup, symbol of feminine power: receptive, holding, creative and manifesting. Ruskin wrote, ‘The calyx is nothing but the swaddling clothes of the flower.’ But a baby is placed into swaddling clothes; it does not magically appear inside of them. The calyx is more rightly the womb, the cauldron of the mother. Continue reading The Calyx

In the dark…

Winter Solstice 2015

22nd December 2015, 4:49 GMT

The descent is over. We have reached the deepest, darkest time of the year. Here we are held in stasis: darkness, limitation and restrictedness. The dive towards this moment began in the hot and heady moment of the Summer Solstice when the forces of growth were at their zenith. Now they are at their nadir. The lifeforce is contracted, withdrawn to the roots, and we are in the midst of the die-back. Continue reading In the dark…

Finding Balance: Autumn Equinox 2015

Autumn Equinox 2015

23rd September 08:22 GMT

Why do you stay in prison

when the door is so wide open?

Move outside the tangle of fear-thinking.

Live in silence.

Flow down and down in always

widening rings of Being.

Rumi

The Sun’s entry into the sign of Libra marks the moment of the autumn equinox, point of balance, as day and night are of equal length all over the globe: a remarkable shared experience for the global human community. In this way, at this moment, we are united. We can choose to bring conscious awareness to this moment of balance and unity, tuning in to the energy of Libra which signifies balance, harmony, justice and relationship. Balance. Balance is what holds everything together. Continue reading Finding Balance: Autumn Equinox 2015

Summer Solstice 2015

At the still point of the turning world. Neither flesh nor fleshless;

Neither from nor towards; at the still point, there the dance is,

But neither arrest nor movement. And do not call it fixity,

Where past and future are gathered. Neither movement from nor towards,

Neither ascent nor decline. Except for the point, the still point,

There would be no dance, and there is only the dance.’

(from T. S. Eliot, ‘Burnt Norton’ II, The Four Quartets)

Except for the still point, there would be no dance… The summer dance is a full-swung thing. We are drawn towards flowering and fruiting and activity; teased and extended into opening and revealing all that was seeded in the chill stillness of the winter solstice’s midnight moment. Midsummer is the zenith, a time of burgeoning growth, as the Sun reaches the peak of its powers. Its light and building warmth call us to wakefulness and vividness. Come alive!
